DEBRA JEAN WITHROW SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE
The Debra Jean Withrow Scholarship Fund wishes to announce the final tally for the October 5th 2012 Silent Auction and Bob’s BBQ Cook Out. The total funds raised and donations from this year’s event totaled $3,049.52.
This will be the final year for fundraising by the Scholarship Trustees and members of the Surgical Services Department of Fairfield Memorial Hospital. The Fund was formed January 2, 2007 in memory of Debra Jean Withrow, a surgical nurse who worked at Fairfield Memorial Hospital at the time of her death in December 2006. She was very involved in teaching students and the President of her local chapter of AORN, The Association of periOperative Registered Nurses.
Since the conception of the Fund, there have been five recipients of the annual scholarship. Previously the scholarship was $500; however, this year, the Trustees increased the annual amount to $1000. This year’s recipient will be chosen by the trustees and awarded in December 2012. The remainder of the funds raised over the past 6 years, $23,200, will be transferred to the Frontier Community College Foundation to be issued annually as the Debra Jean Withrow Scholarship. The scholarship will last until 2035, or longer.
Currently, scholarship applications are available to be picked up at the Fairfield Memorial Hospital Surgery Department or Frontier Community College Nursing Department. Scholarship entry deadline is November 30. The scholarship selection committee will determine the recipient in December. The selection committee reviews the scholarship applications that include an essay, two letters of recommendation, proof of full-time status, second year registered nursing student, and proof of their current overall GPA. For further information about the scholarship program, call Kathleen Heltsley, FMH Director of Surgical Services at 618-847-8292.
“The Trustees wish to thank friends, family, the community, the medical staff, and the administration and employees of Fairfield Memorial Hospital for being so supportive of the scholarship. Through everyone’s efforts, we will help at least thirty registered nursing students reach their educational goals. Even though the Scholarship Fund Trustees will disband at the end of the year, the Frontier Community College Foundation will graciously keep the funds intact and decide on an annual recipient, along with collecting any future donations beginning January 2013,” stated Kathleen Heltsley, President of the Debra Jean Withrow Scholarship Fund.
Future donations are welcome and are 501(c)(3) tax deductable. Until the end of this year, checks can be made payable to Debra Jean Withrow Scholarship Fund and should be mailed to Fairfield Memorial Hospital, c/o Kathleen Heltsley, 303 NW 11th Street, Fairfield, IL 62837.
