EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS
- Preferred: Bachelor of Science degree in engineering, architecture, safety, construction management, or related field; Working knowledge of boilers, HVAC, refrigeration, generators, plumbing, electrical systems, and building codes; Experience with blueprint reading and security systems.
EXPERIENCE
- Required: Seven to ten years of supervisory experience in plant operations, maintenance, or facilities management.

NATURE OF WORK
The Director of Plant Operations is a senior leadership role responsible for ensuring that Fairfield Memorial Hospital’s physical environment is safe, functional, and supportive of patient care. This position oversees all aspects of facility management, including engineering, maintenance, groundskeeping, safety, and security. The Director serves as the hospital’s Safety Officer, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as accreditation standards. The role requires strategic planning, fiscal management, and hands-on leadership to maintain the hospital’s infrastructure, safeguard patients and staff, and support the hospital’s mission of delivering high-quality healthcare. The Director collaborates with executive leadership, department heads, and external contractors to plan and execute facility projects, manage budgets, and implement preventative maintenance programs. This position demands strong technical expertise, regulatory knowledge, and the ability to lead diverse teams while fostering a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead and supervise maintenance, security, and grounds staff.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, ADA, The Joint Commission, Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and safety regulations.
- Oversee preventative maintenance programs and facility operations (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, security).
- Manage budgets, capital projects, and vendor contracts.
- Maintain hospital buildings, grounds, and mechanical systems.
- Serve as Safety Officer, overseeing fire safety, disaster preparedness, and infection control.
- Coordinate security systems, telecommunications, and contractor services.
- Conduct facility assessments and implement improvement plans.
- Promote professionalism, teamwork, and continuous improvement across the department.
- Delegate staff assignments and develop staff competencies and training.
