    Coding Specialist

    Minimum Requirements:

    EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS

    • Required: AHIMA or AAPC certification, or willingness to obtain certification within 2 years of employment.
    • Required: Minimum of two years of active coding experience.


    EXPERIENCE
    Preferred: 1–2 years of coding experience in a Critical Access Hospital or Rural Health Clinic


    SKILLS

    • Meticulous and able to work independently, possess excellent time management and computer skills.
    • In-depth knowledge of ICD-10, CPT and HCPCS Codes and guidelines
    • In-depth knowledge of E/M level requirements
    • High attention to detail and accuracy.
    • Ability to remain calm and professional in emergency or crisis situations.
    • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.
    • Commitment to confidentiality and patient rights.

    NATURE OF WORK
    The Coding Specialist is responsible for applying ICD-10 CM, ICD-10 PCS, and CPT coding rules to accurately complete coding for all services provided at Fairfield Memorial Hospital. This role ensures timely and precise coding of inpatient, outpatient, and ancillary accounts while maintaining compliance, confidentiality, and professional standards.


    Key Responsibilities

    • Thoroughly examine patient records, including physician's notes, lab reports, and other documentation, to extract relevant information for coding purposes.
    • Accurately assign appropriate code using ICD-10, ICD-10 PCS, and CPT coding rules and 3M encoder for all hospital services.
    • Maintain an elevated level of accuracy in coding and ensure adherence to all relevant coding guidelines, regulations, and payer-specific requirements.
    • Collaborate with the care team to clarify documentation and obtain necessary information for accurate coding.
    • Keep abreast of changes in coding guidelines, regulations, and payer requirements through ongoing education and training.
    • Communicates trends and identified issues to the Lead Coding Specialist and/or HIM Director
    • Other duties within scope of job functions as assigned.
