EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS

Required: Bachelor’s degree in Business, Supply Chain, Healthcare Administration, or equivalent combination of education and experience

Preferred: Advanced degree in Business, Healthcare Administration, or related field; Certification in Supply Chain Management or Healthcare Materials Management
EXPERIENCE

Required: Three to five years of experience in materials management or supply chain, preferably in a healthcare setting

Preferred: Hospital or Critical Access Hospital experience; Supervisory or management experience; Experience supporting audits, inventory counts, or cost reporting; Working knowledge of FIFO inventory controls and healthcare inventory systems

NATURE OF WORK
The Materials Management Manager provides leadership and oversight for all hospital supply chain functions, including purchasing, receiving, storage, inventory control, and distribution. This role ensures reliable supply availability across departments, supports financial controls, and maintains compliance with hospital policies and regulatory standards. The manager works closely with Finance and clinical leadership to align supply chain practices with budgetary goals, regulatory requirements, and operational needs.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Oversee purchasing, receiving, storage, and distribution of medical and non-medical supplies.

Maintain accurate inventory records using FIFO methodology and established inventory controls.

Establish and manage par levels to ensure uninterrupted patient care while minimizing excess inventory.

Build and maintain effective working relationships with Nursing, Surgery, Lab, Imaging, and other departments.

Provide consistent, timely communication regarding supply availability, backorders, and substitutions.

Manage vendor relationships, pricing agreements, and contract compliance, including GPO participation.

Coordinate with Finance on purchase order approvals, GL coding, invoice resolution, and month-end close support.

Monitor supply expense trends and identify opportunities for cost reduction and standardization.

Support internal and external audits, inventory counts, and cost-report-related documentation.

Ensure compliance with hospital policies, regulatory standards, and infection control requirements.

Supervise, train, and cross-train materials management staff as applicable.

Evaluate competitive quotes and bids; maintain detailed purchasing records.

Participate in hospital emergency, fire, and disaster drills; direct departmental activities during emergencies.
